How did you get involved in The Church at Crossroads?

In 2017, when I was pregnant with my 7-year-old, I was connected to Crossroads for parenting classes. After attending a few sessions, I met Reverend Teresa, who because an instant connection for conversations and resources when I visited Crossroads. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Reverend Teresa approached me about a church for the children. I was able to provide a lot of feedback from the beginning, and ended up joining the advisory committee! It has been great: we educate children in the best way, and there are countless opportunities for parents to provide input as the church and community grow.

What does it mean to you to have this community at The Church at Crossroads?

It means a lot, and doing the work makes it that much more incredible. Not only am I a part of something, but I’ve been given the opportunity to expand my impact to rest of the neighborhood surrounding the church. Connections to NW Goldberg Cares, their parks, and programs like Reading in the Holland Maize have been awesome.

What is your favorite program at The Church at Crossroads?

My favorite program is the Good News Crew because it helps teach my children about the Bible - we were given a copy for free through the program - and God. During COVID, we were able to participate virtually, which was outstanding, and when it was safe, we were able to come together. It had a positive impact on all of the children who participated!

What does ‘building beloved community’ mean to you?

To me, building beloved community means constantly feeling welcomed into a safe space where all opinions are not only taken into account, but valued. As I see how beneficial it is to the community, it continues to mean that much more.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Yes! I have two stories:

  • A few years ago, one of my children was accused of a crime; Reverend Teresa was at every court date alongside me, praying with me. Reverend Teresa has been there for college announcements, prom send-offs, and more – she is family!

  • Earlier this year, my younger son and I were planning to go to a back-to-school event, but I had to let him know that it conflicted with the Good News Crew at church. When he heard that, he said he’d rather go to church! Moments like that help me realize what a blessing this truly is.
